Climate change has already had devastating effects on Filipino farmers. To combat this, we’re launching a project to increase the resilience of five small-scale farmers’ organizations in Camarines Norte, Sorsogon, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Surigao del Norte. The project will provide training in disaster risk reduction to help farmers protect themselves from climate-related shocks such as typhoons, landslides, and droughts.

Initially, 50 key members of the cooperatives will be trained, who will then teach 300 other members. Farmers will also learn climate-smart agricultural practices such as using climate-resistant seeds, organic fertilizers, and protecting forests to increase their adaptive and mitigation capacities towards climate change.

Moreover, the project aims to institutionalize the use of the Disaster Risk Reduction tool within the cooperatives through the creation of manuals, documentation of good practices, and personnel training. In the long term, all 617,000 members of the five cooperatives could potentially access the tool and knowledge, further increasing their resilience to climate change.

By providing farmers with the necessary tools and knowledge, Trias hopes to make a significant impact in increasing the resilience of small-scale farmers in the Philippines. Together, we can work towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
